The Institute for the Environment & Sustainability at Miami University promotes and advances education on the core issues of sustainability for both the environment and human communities. Its mission focuses on the intersections of people and their surrounding agroecosystems, justice in governance and community security of place, food and culture.
The Institute’s integrated undergraduate curriculum is distinctive in offering co-majors that complement and add value to students’ primary degree choices, encouraging innovative approaches to sustainability across disciplines. At the graduate level, the Professional Science Master’s program emphasizes connectivity and real-world application, culminating in year-long, team-based projects that deliver analyses and solutions for local and regional municipalities.
The Miami Farm serves as a living laboratory for regenerative agriculture, integrated systems design and permaculture principles. In addition, the University’s commitment to campus sustainability has earned it a Gold rating within the global STARS framework, with ongoing efforts toward achieving Platinum status - a reflection of Miami’s coordinated academic and institutional dedication to sustainability.
